This book dealing with the subject of
intellectual property rights (IPR) in information technology (IT) is of a general nature. It is not an exclusive
book on the Intellectual Property Rights alone, for, in that case, it would
have been more elaborate dealing with sundry aspects such as protection of
rights over micro-organisms, plant varieties and farmer’s rights etc. besides
the subject of geographical indication of goods which has lately gained in importance. Nor is it a book handling information
technology law per se; that would explain why it does not deal with cyber-
crimes such as cyber-piracy. It is basically a book covering the IPR aspects
relevant to the IT. That is why it has chapters relating to data base
protection, semiconductor layout designs, E-Commerce etc.
The purpose of this book is to serve as
a handy, general volume meant for any person interested in the IPR and IT. It
could be a kind of vade mecum in the hands of, say, an IT
employee or a law student and could also be of interest to the lawyers, judges
and academicians. Readers will notice that each chapter dealt herein could be a
subject of exclusive specialised study. If reading this book could stimulate the interest in a
few who may like to go for specialisation in a subject of their choosing, the
aim of writing this book may be said to be fulfilled to a large extent.
To conclude, the idea of writing the
book was of my wife, Mrs. Geetha Rajamani, but alas, she departed soon after and
did not live to see its publication. This book stands dedicated to her memory.
